Two of our early blogs mentioned of the WHO’s report confirming depression to be the leading cause of ill-health and disability worldwide. Both the blogs were meant to create awareness about the most common symptoms of depression and the reasons as to why people do not seek out help even when suffering from a severe mental health condition. And now that you have been through both of those blogs, you have earned yourself the right to know all about the methods that may help you cure depression (if you suffer from it) or to prevent yourself from ever getting depressed. So, here are some of the easiest possible homely tricks to evade depression and prevent it from haunting you ever again.
- Schedule Your Life
Depression is one hell of a trick shot amongst the leading severe mental health problems anyone can face. Even worse, it gradually robs you of our basic senses. What I mean to say is that the most depressed people often lose their perception of time. For them, one day may seamlessly melt right away into the next and minutes may seemingly split themselves into infinite hours.
All things said and done, even we have a trick right up our sleeve that even depression can’t handle. The trick is to get your days organized. Schedule every day with utmost precision. Dedicate a journal where you can plan out all the things that you need to do tomorrow before you go to bed tonight. Carry the journal with yourself throughout the day and maintain a list of the things that you do apart from your journal’s daily schedule list. Do this consecutively for 66 days until you grow habituated to it and you will readily see the difference this small trick can bring to your life. Always remember, if anything depresses depression, it has to be a disciplined lifestyle.
- Set A Goal
One of the primary consequences of depression is that it makes you feel unworthy. Depressed people gradually develop a feeling that they cannot accomplish anything in their respective lives. This is not true at all. This indeed can never be true for anyone, not even Mr. Bean (pun intended). Apparently, the next trick is to set a goal for yourself. Even the logic behind this trick is very simple. Our body secretes several hormones like Endorphin, Serotonin, and Dopamine whenever we feel the joy and excitement of accomplishing something. And these hormones commonly known as the Happiness Hormones are the arch enemies of depression.
So, unlike the usual sense in which people decrypt the meaning of setting up a goal, start very small. In fact, you may begin by setting up a goal as small as “brushing your teeth in the morning”. And unless you turn out to be allergic to toothpaste or a die-hard practitioner of the ill-health times, you will end up accomplishing your first goal. And accomplishing goals on a regular basis will end up loosening the grip of depression over your mind. You may always set harder goals to be accomplished, once you get habituated of accomplishing the small ones. Remember, for every one goal, that you accomplish, you get one step closer to kick depression out of your head for good.
- Have A Good Night’s Sleep
Depressed people have more often than not been found out to be suffering from insomnia as well. As a result, the professionals prefer to prescribe different types of sedatives and tranquilizers for the depressed. And, not only is it rare for the prescribed drugs to help cure insomnia, these drugs also tend to have far worse side effects.
The solution is simple. Get the adequate amount of sleep without taking any sort of sedative or tranquilizer whatsoever. And how do you do that? Get any and every distraction that may try to keep you awake for long hours far from your bedroom. Switch off your smartphones, tablets, laptops or televisions before you go to your bed. Every day, go to your bed and get out of it on a particular time and make sure you do not leave your bed before eight hours on the least. Not at least unless you have to pee in the middle of the night. There basically isn’t a single illness in this world that a good sleep cannot cure. Moreover, what better way can you think of beating depression than by dozing off your head?
- Shed Some Sweat
Out of all the bad things that depression does to you, the worst is that it steals away all your enthusiasm and makes you lazy. It gradually encourages you to depart from all sorts of physical activities which in turn transforms you into a loathing and retiring creature, thus endearing even critical phases of depression.
Therefore, the next trick is to workout as much as possible. Not that you must bench-press a hundred kilos or run a marathon every day. Even walking a few miles may prove to be as useful. The trick is basically to get into any kind of activity that requires physical efforts. Continue this for a few months or at best, some years and not only will you get rid of depression but also build yourself a physique to brag about.
- Don’t Give Up
The worst possible thing for a depressed person to do is to give up on everything. If you are depressed you might be tempted to give up on your social life, job, relations and at worst even your own life. People suffering from extreme cases of depression have even been found to exhibit suicidal tendencies.
The trick to avoiding it all is to maintain a bit of optimism and have faith in yourself. And the easiest way to do that is to take up responsibilities. Taking up responsibilities and being involved in regular social or homely activities will help you to maintain a defined lifestyle and counter the effects of depression. So, the next time you feel like giving it all up, just don’t.
- Have Someone To Talk
Depression tends to make you a solo act, cutting all your social ties and enslaving you within your own skin. Understand that no such thing as a lone wolf does exist in reality, not at least under normal and natural circumstances.
The trick is to find someone entrusted to share your feelings and thoughts with. If you have trust issues, consider getting in sessions with a psychiatric or joining in some sort of support groups that keeps your identity a secret. And if you do not like to talk about your condition, try to join a group that shares your common interests of maybe books or cooking or soccer or anything else. Most importantly, when depression tries to imprison you within yourself, reach out to people and share your thoughts.
- Meditate
Depression primarily inflicts its casualties over the mind by compelling a person to lose focus and become absent minded. You may find meditation useful in such times as it enhances your focus and enables you to discover the hidden aspects of your persona. Furthermore, several studies suggest that meditation could play an important role in preventing depression relapse. It has been established that the depression relapse rate for the people who meditate regularly is 70% less than in those who do not meditate at all.
These seven easy and homely depression curing tricks may come in real handy when you do not want to put your faith in the way too costly anti-depressants. And the best thing about them is that using them when you do not suffer from depression will make sure that depression stays several yards away from your precious life.

Depression flat out sucks. I’ve been down this road before and the one thing that really helped out was talking to somebody else. At first I kept quiet which is normal from what I was told. Although extremely unhealthy, we have to let it out by confiding in someone. Good job on this
I appreciate your approach. I think it is important for individuals to consider how they are practicing self-care.
Thanks. These are really helpful and practical tips. I find it very useful to talk to someone and always have a good laugh as a way to lift up my spirit when I am quite depressed myself.
I agree with everything but I think that if someone suffers from a strong depression, the first thing to do is talking to someone and never feel alone.
Very helpful and practical tips. Good post.
